It is 'addictive' just like she said. Share with others and consume in small amounts (if you can), it's all good.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 lb butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup corn syrup
- I tsp baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1- 175 g bag of popcorn twists.
Directions:
- Pour popcorn twists into a large roaster pan and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, bring to boil butter, sugar, and syrup. Cook for 2 minutes.
- Add baking soda, this will foam up and the mixture will thicken. Allow the foam to cook down slightly and remove from heat.
- Add vanilla and stir.
- Pour caramel mixture over popcorn twists and stir until well mixed.
- Bake in a 225º oven for 50 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.
- Remove from oven and pour in a large pan to cool.
- When cool break apart and store in a covered container.
My MIL makes those as well. Very addictive, and gluten free as well. :) Love the picture, Betty!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds very yummy but I have no clue what popcorn twists are. Where do you get them from?
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving,
AMY
Hey Sis, they look so good. Seeing that my container is empty AGAIN, will just have to make up another batch!!! Love the pic!!

Looks most yummy! Popcorn twists are a favorite at this house...with the grands. I'm sure they would love this version. Unfortunately, Americans have to come to Canada to get their supply...since they are not available in the USA.
ReplyDeleteI made these last year and are seriously good.
ReplyDeleteyuppers, it is a Canadian thing made by "Old Dutch".
I am drawing a blank as to what would be a good alternative for those who aren't able to buy these.
The last part made me laugh: `store in a covered container` I don`t know if I`ve ever made these and had to store them....they always disappear before that time ;) No, I do recall putting the leftovers in a zip lock bag. That worked well.
ReplyDeleteYUM!!
I was just down in the States this last weekend and my sis in law bought these `puffs` - they were by Archer Farms (from Target) and they were jalapeno & cheddar flavored. (not sure if there were other flavors) They had the same texture as popcorn twists, and I`m thinking the flavors may actually go well together! Just a thought for those in the US who can`t get popcorn twists :)
This is the same recipe I use....but I used air popped popcorn....because it is healthier!!! LOL!!!!
ReplyDeleteI bake mine for an hour and stir every 15 min. It freezes really great also.
Hmmm...dont think I can resist
ReplyDeleteWOW! I am definitely making this recipe!!
ReplyDeleteI think popcorn twists are going into my suitcase to Colorado!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Betty!
never heard of popcorn twists. where can I buy them in Northern CA? any idea?
ReplyDeleteI never heard of popcorn twists, but it sounds so good!
ReplyDeleteMy son and daughter loved this when they had braces. I have also made this for church game nights. The older people loved it. They could have carmel corn even though the have dentures.
ReplyDeleteBrendaLou..I'm not sure where you could get these popcorn twists, apparently this kind made by 'Old Dutch' can only be bought in Canada. Check Amber's comment.
ReplyDeleteOh this looks to die for! I must run out and get the ingredients this weekend. Glad you posted a new treat for me to put out this Christmas. Kathy
ReplyDeleteOld Dutch also makes puff popcorn..same as the twists...but roundish balls... I make this same recipe with them...
ReplyDeletemade these but added honey roasted peanuts. after they cooled drizzled with chocolate (melted choclate chips/chocolate bark). Put in tins for the employees I work with and was told FANTASTIC!!!! over and over again.
ReplyDeleteJeff..what a wonderful idea, I'll have to make another batch:)
ReplyDeleteSounds good, I might have to try it with popcorn, probably not the same but it might do.
ReplyDeleteI am making these as we speak here in the US with Shearers Corn Puffs. Another option would be Snyders Puff n Corn which my local store didn't have. I think 'addictive' is a proper term. Thanks for the recipe.
ReplyDeletemmmm, Mom these look so good. I am looking forward to trying them. Have a batch ready for Christmas!
ReplyDeleteThere is a web site you can order Popcorn Twists from. www.canadianfavourites.com then search for Popcorn twists.
ReplyDeleteMy husband raved about these at work when someone brought them in...I clicked on your recipe and now I'll have to try to make them myself. Popcorn Twists have been around for ages, I remember having them in Winnepeg 40 years ago and have always loved them. Just like popcorn, but without the kernals.
ReplyDeleteI made this last week and it was a hit! I will make it again with these modifications: use non stick foil on the bottom of the pan and also use unsalted butter b/c the corn twists are very salty to begin with.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this recipe!
I misread and used 1/2 cup butter not half a pound,it turned out, except darker in color. That was my clue to re-read the recipe.
ReplyDeleteHa....I did the same thing but only realized it because I read your comment. LOL! They did turn out though but maybe they won't be as crunchy with the correct amount of butter. Gonna have to try them again....darn it!! :)
DeleteI usually cut the butter back to 3/4 cup & bake them on parchment. For those in the US FritoLay makes Chester's butter flavored Puffcorn, it is pretty much the same thing as Old Dutch Popcorn Twists.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe...I'm always up for trying different treats, especially the easy ones! haha There are several different brands in the US that make these types of puffs. Snyders, FritoLay, Mike-Sells...many more. It's sometimes called "hull-less" popcorn or pirate booty.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if US has the Cheeto twists but I have used them also....try the cheese flavored they r really good with this recipe!!!
